“And then I said, ‘If you insist on returning, I suggest you request Dr. Nelson because I’m no longer treating your feline.’” Haley beams from across the table. “Dr. Nelson is probably about seventy and doesn’t have boobs.”

This, of course, makes my eyes travel southward, but Haley doesn’t even seem to notice. She’s on a high from her accomplishment this morning of putting a prick in his place. It seems the guy went to cop a feel—news that made me want to break his neck—but copped Haley’s fury instead.

So we’re celebrating with spaghetti and vodka, something Haley insists is a classic pairing. Who am I to argue?

“What did your boss say about the whole thing? Wait, do you even have a boss?” I don’t know how her practice is structured.

“I do.” She nods and sets down her glass. She’s made us something called a Woo Woo. It looks exactly like a Shirley Temple and I haven’t dared to try it yet. “Ranvir Patel and Dale Hennessey own the practice. And I didn’t tell anyone—well, apart from Liv… and you. It’s too early in my career to make waves. And, besides, it’s handled.”

My immediate instinct is to puff my chest at being one of the elite few, but I keep my cool. Why my mind insists on reading into things when there is nothing to reveal is beyond me.

“But aren’t they going to wonder why they’ve lost a client?”

She brushes me off with a sweep of her hand. “No. Most clients only come in once a year or when they’re having issues. It’s all very erratic. I’m starting to think there was nothing wrong with AGL beyond a classic tummy ache anyway.”

I swirl the pasta on my fork. “AGL?”

She snickers. “Oh, I haven’t told you the cat’s name, have I? Ariana Grande Latte. It’s no wonder the guy is disturbed.”

My fork pauses mid-air. “A dude named his pet Ariana Grande Latte?”

She shrugs and brings her own bite of spaghetti to her lips. “One can only assume.”

I consider this while I chew my pasta and then wipe my mouth with a napkin. “Wow. I mean, if I had a pet I’d do so much better at the whole naming thing. The availability of cool names is endless.”

“I prefer to get to know the animal first and then choose a name that fits. Like Tank. It’s perfect for him, don’t you think?” Haley looks over at her dog who’s asleep on a pile of toys.

I can’t help my grin. “Absolutely.”

She pulls her phone from her back pocket and thumbs over it for a minute before turning it to me. On the screen is a lab puppy playing in the surf. “So, what’s your first impression of this sweet girl?”

My mouth slides to the side. “Easy. I’d name her Nereid.”

Haley laughs, struggling with the name. “Near-ee-id?”

“Yeah. They were sea nymphs who liked to hang out with Poseidon. Very friendly—and helpful too.”

“Ooookay.” She doesn’t sound convinced.

I pop a bit of garlic bread in my mouth. “Give me a harder one.
